Global Green Iron Tracker
Following the transition from iron ore to low-carbon iron.
Explore projects, trace milestones and understand the technologies moving from demonstration to industrial deployment.
A changing industrial landscape
Filter the map and directory. One marker per project, never per country. Select a project to see its location and evidence.
Each labelled marker represents one project or distinct process installation. Co-located technology trials may have separate records; counts are not counts of unique steelworks. Projects in the same country remain separate; no country totals or marker clustering are used. Some locations are approximate city/county anchors. 2 unresolved location(s) are not plotted. Selected examples, not a global census. Stages reflect the cited evidence date; older records may not reflect current conditions. “Operation reported” includes trials and does not imply commercial green-iron output.

What to look beyond the headlines
Hydrogen readiness ≠ green iron
The actual reducing gas and its origin matter. A hydrogen-ready furnace can still operate with fossil-derived gas.
Ore quality shapes the route
Gangue, reducibility and sticking connect laboratory questions to the choice between direct reduction, smelting and electrolysis.
First metal is a beginning
Continuous operation, energy demand and product quality determine whether an initial demonstration can become an industrial process.
From industrial questions to research
Explore low-carbon ironmaking routes and the science behind their development.
Scope, definitions & sources
Information disclaimer. This tracker is provided for general information and academic discussion. It draws primarily on public reports, company announcements, government documents and research publications; other supplied leads are labelled where applicable. Reasonable care is taken in compiling the records, but the author makes no warranty as to their accuracy, completeness or currency and accepts no responsibility for errors, omissions or losses arising from reliance on this information. Inclusion does not imply endorsement or independent verification of a project or its environmental claims. Readers should consult the linked original sources and verify material facts independently.
Coverage and limitations. 55 records include literature-led additions and cover all thirteen entries in the supplied China overview and all twelve entries in the global overview, with existing records merged. 2 record(s) remain unlocated and are listed separately. MaxH2DR is a multi-country research programme represented by its BFI demonstrator; COURSE50 is a blast-furnace research record. Třinec is a DRI lead under verification. The Brazil MOE Steel entry is a user-supplied siting lead awaiting official confirmation; its country label is not a confirmed plant location. This is not an exhaustive global inventory or a certification of “green” production. Initial source review took place on 28 September 2026; the Cangzhou location was supplied by Kejiang Li on 29 September 2026; that date is not a claim that each project’s latest status has been independently verified.
Coverage. Ore-based low-carbon and near-zero-emission ironmaking, including transition projects, pilots and commercial developments. Biomass reduction, HIsarna, HIsmelt and hydrogen-rich CISP are included as distinct pathways. Inclusion does not certify zero emissions; fossil-carbon inputs, biomass sourcing and carbon capture must be assessed separately. Standalone critical-metals plants are outside this selection. The Qinjin hydrogen/EAF-casting filing is retained as a related project with unverified ore-reduction scope; it may correspond to the unresolved Jing’an slide lead, so record counts are not counts of confirmed distinct plants. Records marked Verification pending have not been independently established; Status under review denotes conflicting or problematic operating evidence. A review date is not an event date; it also labels reviews of undated live project pages. Research programme records are not commercial plants. Pilot / demonstration is an editorial scale grouping, not a numerical capacity threshold.
Stages. Development: planning, engineering or financing evidence. Construction: physical construction reported. Commissioning: staged start-up. Operation reported: a source records operation or production, including trials; continuous operation is not assumed. Paused: the developer reports suspension; the original site and scale remain historical plans. Final investment decision, delays, suspension and cancellation should be recorded as additional milestones when supported.
Quantities and terms. Mt = million tonnes; DRI = direct reduced iron; HBI = hot briquetted iron; MOE = molten oxide electrolysis. Planned capacity, actual output, iron and steel are distinct. No aggregate emissions savings are estimated. Coordinates indicate approximate project areas, not surveyed plant boundaries. Province/state and locality names are shown for every project. The China, contiguous-US and Australia views include schematic first-level administrative boundaries.
Bubble size. Circle area is proportional to published annual iron-product design or target capacity (DRI, HBI or iron), not actual output, contained-Fe mass, green-certified output, or project investment. Lower bounds are plotted at their stated bound. Original pilot targets are labelled explicitly. Fixed-size open diamonds indicate unverified iron capacity or steel-only capacity; they do not mean zero. Tiny bubbles retain a larger invisible hit area and an external project number. Displaced bubbles use leaders to the project anchor. Each project/site has its own marker, name and record, including multiple projects in the same country. Nearby sites are separated with leader lines, not aggregated. The size key remains identical between regional views.
Evidence. A supplied 2026 review by Zhang, Li and colleagues, Research progress and prospects of new low-carbon ironmaking processes and technologies abroad, informed candidate selection; linked public primary sources support the added records. Laboratory-only concepts are not counted as industrial plants. Project detail panels link to government approvals, company/supplier releases and research literature. Unresolved entries cite the user-supplied overview explicitly rather than implying independent verification. Company claims are attributed rather than treated as independently measured outcomes. Unconfirmed values are left unquantified.
Context resources. LeadIT Green Steel Tracker · Global Energy Monitor. Coastlines and country boundaries: public-domain Natural Earth, distributed through world-atlas (1:110m). Country borders are shown with darker lines; provincial/state boundaries use lighter lines. Administrative lines for China, the United States and Australia use Natural Earth 1:50m data; these are orientation aids, not cadastral boundaries.
Maintenance. Updated periodically as public information becomes available. Automated monitoring is not enabled for this tracker.
